  • Ghent University finances only the research conducted in Ghent for 24 months. The candidate must secure full-time funding for the remaining 24 months of research to be carried out in the South.
  • Candidates need to come from – and have the nationality of – one of the selected Global South countries (see country list)
  • The candidate, a supervisor at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university (South) must jointly submit the proposals.
  • This program is for students starting their PhD. PhD students may have completed some preliminary research, but at the start of the fellowship (1/10/2025), they must still need at least 36 months of doctoral research to finish their PhD.
  • Only degree students (students who intend to obtain a (joint ) PhD degree at Ghent University) can apply. Exchange students cannot apply for this scholarship; 
  • Possess a master’s degree relevant to the PhD field.
  • Demonstrate an excellent academic record and potential in research.
  • Should have a faculty member at Ghent University as a supervisor.
Co-funding

Co-funding is mandatory with this scholarship. In general, the following conditions must be guaranteed by the partner in the South:

  1. There must be a local PhD supervisor at the partner university or research center in the South;
  2. The partner university must provide a written statement confirming that the candidate will receive a full-time local PhD scholarship or salary for 24 months while working on the PhD at the partner university in the South.
  3. You will be fully exempt from teaching or other assignments, allowing you to concentrate entirely on your PhD research in the South. Applicants can dedicate maximum 10 % of their time (fulltime appointment) to other tasks (teaching and other tasks)

  • Accommodation: €350 – €600 (varies by location and housing type; university dorms or shared apartments are often more affordable).
  • Food: €200 – €300 (cooking at home helps reduce costs; eating out may increase expenses).
