The Asian Development Bank Scholarship (JSP) 2025 in Japan provides fully funded scholarships to eligible students from developing countries to pursue postgraduate studies in Japan. The Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB–JSP) was established in April 1988 with financing from the Government of Japan.   • Monthly subsistence allowance (including housing)
  • Books and instructional materials

  • For scholars engaged in research, a special grant may be available for thesis preparation.
  • In special circumstances, computer literacy, preparatory language, and other similar courses may be covered under the scholarship.

  • Thesis publication or related additional costs not covered by tuition fees
  • Be a national of an ADB borrowing member country eligible for the Japanese ODA scholarship.
  • Not hold dual citizenship with any developed country.
  • Gain admission to an approved master’s program at a designated institution.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with an excellent academic record.
  • Have at least two years of full-time work experience after earning their degree.
  • Demonstrate strong English communication skills in speaking and writing.
  • Be 35 years old or younger at the time of application (exceptions apply with Japan’s approval).
  • Be in good health.
  • Commit to returning and working in their home country for at least two years after graduation.
  • Not be an ADB employee, consultant, or close relative of ADB staff.
  • Not work for a designated institution under ADB-JSP.
  • Reside and work in their home country at the time of application.
  • Not already be enrolled in a graduate degree program.

  • Completed ADB–JSP application form.
  • Certificate of Employment for the duration of employment issued by the company.
  • Academic documentation – both academic transcripts and degree certificates.
  • Certificate of Income issued by the company.
  • Copy of your Passport.
  • Certificate of Family Income issued by the company. Must be either your parents or spouses annual/monthly income.
  • Valid IELTS test.
  1. Applicant requests information and application forms from the chosen institution.
  2. Applicant completes required documents, including the ADB-JSP information sheet
  3. Applicant submits documents to the institution.
  4. Institution evaluates the applicant and decides on admission.
  5. Institution sends a shortlist of candidates to ADB.
  6. ADB reviews the submissions from the institution.
  7. ADB selects awardees based on its criteria and seeks approval from the Japanese executive director.
  8. ADB selects scholars and informs the institution.
  9. The institution notifies all selected scholars.
  • Applicants must submit their latest income tax return or a certification of their annual/monthly salary, along with a family income certificate (parent’s income), if available.
  • Submit the completed application forms and academic records to the institution at least six (6) months before the desired intake start date.
  • Only candidates who are admitted and endorsed by the academic institutions will be considered for the ADB scholarship.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to returning to your country to contribute to its development.

Living expenses in Japan vary depending on the city but typically range from ¥120,000 to ¥150,000 (USD 800–1,000), covering housing, food, transportation, and miscellaneous costs.

  1. When is the deadline for submission of application?
    • Send applications for scholarships at least six months prior to the planned time that you wish to commence studies.
    • Please refer to the normal month of intake and deadline for application in the participating academic institutions.
  2. Can I apply to more than one institution at the same time?
    • Yes. You may apply to more than one institution simultaneously. However, you should mention this in the application form.
  3. Does ADB–JSP cover funding for seminars and short training courses?
    • No. ADB–JSP provides funding only for graduate studies. ADB–JSP does not sponsor undergraduate studies, distance learning programs, short-term training, conferences, seminar, thesis writing and research projects.
  4. Is there an age limit?
    Yes, applicants must be under 35 years old.
  5. Are dependents’ expenses covered?
    No, the scholarship does not cover costs for dependents.
