The ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents, established by the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), offers scholarships for international students to pursue Master’s and Ph.D. programs at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), or other institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) around China. CAS-ANSO Scholarship has two categories: degree program and non-degree program. CAS ANSO Scholarship degree program supports 100 to 200 Master’s students and 300 PhD students every year to pursue postgraduate education at the USTC, UCAS, and CAS around China. These fully funded scholarships for international students are a great opportunity to study in China.

USTC is ranked 57th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2024. UCAS is ranked 62nd globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. TWAS and UNESCO, both founding members of ANSO, provide part of the funding for ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship awardees. The Alliance of National and International Science Organizations for the Belt and Road Regions (ANSO) is a non-profit, non-governmental international organization founded in 2018. Founding members include the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and 36 other scientific institutions, universities, and international organizations worldwide. The deadline to apply for the CAS ANSO Scholarship 2025 intake is February 15, 2025.

The programs cover diverse disciplines, particularly focusing on:

  • Natural and Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences)
  • Engineering and Technology (Materials Science, Computer Science)
  • Biological Sciences (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology)
  • Environmental Sciences and Ecology
  • Management and Social Sciences in relation to scientific development.

Students are encouraged to select majors aligned with their research interests. Both USTC and UCAS are highly ranked and research-oriented institutions, making them excellent choices for these fields​

For PhD candidates:

  • All tuition fees will be waived.
  • A monthly stipend of 6,000 or 7,000 CNY/month for up to 48 months will be given after passing the qualification test of the university.
  • Health insurance will be included.
  • The application fee will be waived.
  • International travel allowance or reimbursement will be provided.
  • An accommodation subsidy will be given.
  • A one-time visa or residence permit will be included.

For Master’s candidates:

  • All tuition fees will be waived.
  • A monthly stipend of 3,000 CNY/month up to 36 months will be given.
  • Health insurance will be included.
  • The application fee will be waived.
  • International travel allowance or reimbursement will be provided.
  • An accommodation subsidy will be given.
  • A one-time visa or residence permit will be included.
  • Personal expenses
  • Non-Chinese citizenship
  • Age limit:
    • Master’s: Below 30 years (born after 1st January 1995 (inclusive);)
    • Ph.D.: Below 35 years (1st January 1990 (inclusive);)
  • Must meet admission requirements of USTC or UCAS
  • Proficiency in English or Chinese
  • ·Eligible applicants should NOT take up other assignments during the period of his/her scholarship.
  • Students who are currently doing a master/doctoral degree at any university in China cannot apply for this master/PhD scholarship program.
  • All awardees have to complete the centralized training in the Chinese language, Chinese culture, and all required credits.
  • All awardees have to complete the practical research and degree thesis at colleges and schools of USTC/UCAS or CAS institutes.
  • Candidates can either apply for a USTC or UCAS scholarship.

    • Homestay with a Chinese family: $400–$600 per month for cultural immersion.

    • Expect to pay $80–$140 per month for electricity, water, heating, and garbage disposal.
    • Internet: Around $20 per month.
  3. Food:
    • Eating at local Chinese restaurants or cafeterias costs about $100–200 per month. Western food is generally more expensive.
  4. Health Insurance:
    • Health insurance is mandatory for students staying longer than six months, costing around $100 annually.
  5. Transportation:
    • Public transport is very economical, with monthly passes costing around $15–30, depending on the city.
  6. Phone & Mobile Data:
    • Around $10–15 per month for calls and internet on your mobile device.

The total monthly living expenses can range between $500 and $800, making China an attractive destination for international students seeking affordable yet quality education.

These figures reflect both metropolitan areas and smaller cities; big cities like Beijing and Shanghai tend to have higher living costs compared to others like Xi’an or Chengdu. Planning and budgeting wisely will help you manage your finances better throughout your study period in China.

  1. Can I apply if I am already studying in China?
    • No, current Master’s or Ph.D. students in China cannot apply for the same level under this scholarship.
  2. Can I work while on the scholarship?
    • No, scholarship holders are not allowed to take up employment during their studies.
  3. What if I fail my annual assessment?
    • The scholarship will be terminated, and the student will only receive a certificate of attendance.
  4. Can I apply to multiple universities simultaneously?
    • No, applicants are restricted to applying for either USTC or UCAS, not both.
  5. Is airfare included in the scholarship?
    • No, students are responsible for their travel costs to China
