The Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship(GUIPRS) 2025 allows international students to pursue higher degree research (HDR) at Griffith University by covering tuition fees and providing health insurance. The Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship(GUIPRS) is awarded to students starting or currently enrolled in a Higher Degree Research (HDR) program through a competitive process.

Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship(GUIPRS) covers tuition fees for the duration of the scholarship. While most awards follow standard criteria, a limited number may be given to support specific strategic goals, which could involve extra eligibility requirements or different selection procedures. In such cases, the terms of the scholarship will be adjusted accordingly.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be an international student (not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident).
  • Be enrolled or intending to enroll in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program at Griffith University.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours or equivalent.
  • Not have completed a degree at the same or higher level as the HDR program.
  • If already enrolled, must not have completed more than 12 months of HDR candidature.
  • Not have held the same or equivalent scholarship unless certain conditions apply.
  • Not have received a Commonwealth Australia Award scholarship in the past two years (unless approved by DFAT).
  • Not be receiving a similar Commonwealth-funded tuition scholarship.
  • Applicants must show proof of a scholarship or sponsorship covering living expenses (minimum AUD 35,000 per year) to apply.
  • Applications are accepted anytime under the Continuous Scholarship Round.

Commencement of Study

  • Must accept the HDR program and GUIPRS by the date in the offer letter.
  • Normally expected to start within the year of the award.
  • Deferral possible only if mentioned in the offer letter and approved.

Remote Candidature

  • On-campus enrolment is mandatory.

Study Load

  • Full-time study is required unless part-time is approved.
  • Full-time = approximately 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, 48 weeks per year.

Employment & Funding

  • Allowed to work outside the research project if it doesn’t affect studies.
  • Employment is not a valid reason for an extension.
  • May receive additional funding for research-related travel, equipment, or fieldwork.

Part-time Awards

  • Only available for those with caring responsibilities, medical conditions, or disabilities.
  • Not allowed for work-related reasons.
  • Duration is adjusted pro-rata; conversion to full-time is possible with approval.

Tenure

  • Up to 2 years for Master’s and 3 years for PhD (full-time).
  • Tenure may be reduced if candidate has prior study.
  • Extensions (up to 6 months) are available only for valid academic or placement reasons (PhD only).

Change to Program

  • Transfers between HDR programs allowed with adjusted award duration.
  • Major changes to thesis topics are allowed if approved.

Leave Provisions

  • Leave allowed per candidature and scholarship policies; GUIPRS is suspended during leave.

Industry Placements / Internships

  • Permitted if approved and last 30+ days (max 6 months).
  • Must not exceed tenure or conflict with thesis submission.

Ethics

  • Must comply with national and university research ethics and safety policies.

Termination of Award

  • GUIPRS can be terminated due to non-compliance, unsatisfactory progress, misconduct, unapproved leave, or if eligibility criteria are no longer met.
