Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS): Explained

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) is open to outstanding international students from non-EU/EEA countries pursuing a full-time master’s program. The application deadlines are 1 October 2024 (for programs starting in February 2025) and 1 February 2025 (for programs starting in September 2025). Leiden University is one of the best universities in the Netherlands for international students. Every year this university offers various Scholarships.

  • Science and Engineering (e.g., Computer Science, Biology)
  • Governance and Global Affairs

Programs such as advanced LLM and certain MSc tracks are prioritized under the LExS scheme

  • €10,000 or €15,000 of the tuition fee
  • Full tuition minus statutory tuition fees
  • It does not cover living expenses, health insurance, or visa fees
    • Housing, insurance, and travel costs
    • Personal expenses and daily living costs
    • Must hold a non-EU/EEA passport
    • Must have exceptional academic records, typically in the top 10% of their previous program
    • Must meet Dutch visa requirements and not be eligible for Dutch government financial aid
    • Language Proficiency Based on University Requirements

    Applicants need to provide the following:

    1. Master’s Program Application: Completed through the Leiden University online portal.
    2. Motivation Letter: Specific to the LExS scholarship, explain your academic achievements and future goals.
    3. Academic Transcripts: To demonstrate excellence in previous studies, typically placing the applicant in the top 10% of their program.
    4. Proof of English Proficiency: IELTS/TOEFL or other equivalent tests.
    5. Copy of Passport
    6. Any additional documents as specified by the program of choice
    • Apply online for the master’s program at Leiden University.
    • Once admitted, indicate your interest in the LExS scholarship and submit a motivation letter via the university’s online portal
    • Demonstrate academic excellence with strong grades and achievements.
    • Write a compelling motivation letter explaining why you are a good fit for the scholarship.
    • Apply early to avoid last-minute issues.

    Living costs in the Netherlands can vary depending on lifestyle and housing options. The estimated monthly breakdown is:

    • Accommodation: €500–800 (shared or private)
    • Food and Groceries: €200–300
    • Health Insurance: €100–120
    • Transportation: €40–80 (public transport or bicycle-related costs)
    • Miscellaneous (clothing, leisure, etc.): €150–200

    Total monthly expenses range between €1,000–1,500, which students should budget accordingly
