Macquarie University Research Scholarship 2025: Australia

The Macquarie University Research Scholarship 2025 offers outstanding international students the opportunity to pursue research-based postgraduate degrees in Australia. The iRTP is an Australian Government scholarship program for international graduate research students, managed by universities on behalf of the Department of Education. Applications are submitted directly to participating universities. The number of international RTP places varies annually. Applicants for the iRTP are automatically considered for the University-funded iMQRES in the same round.

The iMQRES is a Macquarie University Research Scholarship supporting exceptional international graduate research students in priority research areas aligned with the University’s Strategic Research Framework (2015–2025). Macquarie University ranked in the top 200 universities globally in the QS World University Rankings. The scholarship supports high-achieving candidates committed to impactful research across diverse disciplines. Applications close on 2 March 2025.

The Macquarie University Research Scholarship is available for various disciplines, including:

  • Engineering: Electronics, Telecommunications, and Civil Engineering
  • Social Sciences: Psychology, Sociology, and Political Science
  • Humanities: Philosophy, History, and Linguistics
  • Business and Economics: Finance, Marketing, and Management

iRTP Candidates:

  • Tuition Fee Offset: Up to 3 years
  • Living Stipend: AUD 38,500 per year (up to 3 years)
  • Travel Concession: Discount on local transport (OPAL card)

iMQRES Candidates:

  • Tuition Fee Offset: Up to 3 years
  • Living Stipend: AUD 38,500 per year (up to 3 years)

For Applicants Not Meeting PhD Criteria:

  • May receive entry to an MRes program with a provisional PhD offer.
  • Competitive candidates may receive a scholarship for the MRes portion.

  1. Citizenship: Must be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand (not a permanent resident of Australia).
  2. Location: Plan to live in Sydney, Australia, during the study.
  3. Programs: Apply for a full-time Master of Research (MRes) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) starting in Session 2, 2025.
  4. Academic Requirements:
    • Meet admission criteria for MRes or PhD.
    • Have completed your degree if applying for a PhD (except for Macquarie applicants or MQBS).
  5. English Proficiency: Fulfill Macquarie’s English language requirements.
  6. Supervision: Have confirmation of supervision from a Macquarie researcher (compulsory for most faculties).
  7. Visa: Hold a valid visa to study in Australia by Session 2, 2025.
  8. Award-holders can receive minor awards or funding for research-related expenses.

Who Cannot Apply:

  • Currently enrolled in a progressing Macquarie research program (e.g., MRes Year 1 to Year 2).
  • Already enrolled in a research degree at Macquarie before January 1, 2025.
  • Receiving another full scholarship or salary for the same program.
  • Already hold a research degree at the same or higher level in the same field.
  • Submit false or incomplete applications.
  • Research-based Master’s degree or equivalent (e.g., coursework Master’s with a strong research component).
  • Publications in refereed journals, books, or conference presentations.
  • Substantial research experience in a relevant field.

  2. Find a research scholarship
  3. Identify a research supervisor at Macquarie University.
    • Referees are not needed for Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of Research applications, or for those currently enrolled at or recently graduated from Macquarie University within the past 12 months.
  4. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the supervisor.
  5. Complete the online application through the university’s portal.
  6. Attach all required documents.
  7. Submit your application before the deadline.

  • Miscellaneous Expenses: AUD 200–300
