Sokendai KEK Summer Student Program 2025 in Japan

The Sokendai KEK Summer Student Program 2025 in Japan offers undergraduate and master’s students a fully funded opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research at KEK’s Tsukuba and Tokai campuses. The duration of stay is up to 8 weeks from middle of June to middle of August. The Sokendai KEK Summer Student Program is Financially Funded by the SOKENDAI, the Graduate University for Advanced Studies. 

KEK (High Energy Accelerator Research Organization) is a leading research facility in Japan specializing in accelerator science. KEK offers hands-on research opportunities for both national and international students at both Tsukuba and Tokai campuses, where they can work under the guidance of experienced researchers and possibly collaborate with SOKENDAI students or postdocs. The Sokendai KEK Summer Student Program spans eight weeks, from June to August 2025, with an application deadline of March 3, 2025, at 9:00 AM Japan time.

Participants can delve into diverse research fields, including:

  • Elementary Particle Physics
  • Nuclear Physics
  • Material and Life Sciences
  • Accelerator Science
  • Advanced Detection Systems (Sensors, Electronics, Computing)
  • Theoretical Studies (e.g., computational methods in quantum field theory, such as Lattice QCD)
  • Airfare (arranged and paid directly by organizers)
  • Accommodation in KEK/J-PARC dormitories
  • Per diem: A fixed daily allowance of 1,500 yen for living expenses.
  • Domestic travel (airport to KEK/J-PARC, reimbursed based on KEK financial rules)

For Participants from Japanese Universities:

  • Accommodation in KEK/J-PARC dormitories
  • Per diem: A fixed daily allowance of 1,500 yen for living expenses.
  • Domestic travel (reimbursed based on KEK financial rules)
  • Travel costs paid via domestic bank transfer

Participants are responsible for:

  • Visa application fees.
  • Medical insurance costs.
  • Target Students:
    • Late-stage undergraduate students or early-stage graduate (Master’s) students as of March 1, 2025.
    • Both international and Japanese students are eligible.
  • Desired Knowledge:
    • Preferably knowledge in dynamics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics.
    • This is a guideline and may vary based on the research group.
  • Uncertain Eligibility:
    • Applicants unsure about eligibility are encouraged to contact the program.
  • IELTS is not required.
  • No Application Fees.

Applicants need to submit:

  • CV
  • Official transcript (with an English translation if in another language)
  • Application form (Word format)
  • Recommendation letter (at least one, from a current or recent university supervisor/researcher)
  • File size must be under 5MB.
  • Include the assigned ID number in all file names.
  • Ask your supervisor to email the recommendation letter directly to the provided email address.

  • Applicants must complete a registration form.
  • After registration, applicants will be assigned an ID number.
  • The ID number is the same as the reference number sent via email.
