UNESCO Wonju Literature Residency 2025 in South Korea

Wonju UNESCO City of Literature are calling for applications from writers connected to the cities that make up the Cities of Literature network to apply for an 8-week residency opportunity at the Toji Cultural Centre to writers connected to the cities that make up the Cities of Literature network in UNESCO Wonju Literature Residency.

Around 16 to 19 other writers and artists will be staying at the Toji Cultural Centre during the residency period, and Wonju City of Literature hope this will be an opportunity to forge creative friendships and enjoy the tranquil environment. The UNESCO Wonju Literature Residency will run from September 1st to October 31st, 2025. The residency includes a round-trip air fare, transportation on arrival and departure dates, accommodation with a workspace, and organic meals at the Toji Cultural Centre cafeteria. The final deadline to apply is 11 July 2025

  • Reputation: Toji Centre is a long-standing literary hub since 1999 hosting ~1,200 international writers
  • Program Duration: 8 weeks (1 Sept–31 Oct 2025)

Submit a 1,000–2,000 word document (12 pt) covering:

  7. Your connection to a City of Literature

  3. Successful applicants will be notified by 30 July 2025

While most costs are covered, expect to pay for:

  • Dinner/holiday meals: ₩300,000–500,000 → 23,000–38,000 BDT/month
  • Local transport & incidentals: ₩150,000–300,000 → 11,500–23,000 BDT/month
  • Personal purchases & entertainment: ₩200,000–400,000 → 15,000–30,000 BDT/month

  1. Can non-fiction writers apply?
    Yes—any literary genre is welcome. What’s key is your connection to a UNESCO City of Literature.
  2. Is English enough?
    Yes, B2-level proficiency is required and sufficient

    No—only the specified Word document and passport copy. Extra materials won’t be reviewed .
  4. Do I need to complete work?
    No structured deliverables are required; this is a reflective, creative residency
  5. What if I don’t live in a City of Literature currently?
    You can still apply if you can demonstrate past connection (e.g., study, work, residency)
